Description: VDE Energy Shares

Vanguard Energy Index Fund ETF Shares (VDE) is a passively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of an energy-sector index. The fund invests in U.S. companies of all market capitalizations-large, mid-size, and small-that are classified within the energy sector under the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS).

The fund uses a full replication strategy, aiming to hold all or substantially all of the constituent stocks in approximately the same weights as the underlying index. Unlike most diversified Vanguard ETFs, this fund is classified as non-diversified, meaning it may concentrate a larger portion of its assets in a smaller number of holdings.

The GICS energy sector primarily encompasses companies involved in oil and gas exploration and production, refining and marketing, pipeline transportation, and energy equipment and services. As a passive index fund, VDE typically benefits from lower operating costs compared to actively managed funds, a structural feature common to Vanguards index product lineup.

Headlines to Watch Out For
  • Crude oil prices rally on supply constraints and OPEC cuts
  • US shale production growth pressures energy sector margins
  • Energy transition policies reshape long-term demand outlook
