The First Trust Materials AlphaDEX® Fund (FXZ) is an exchange-traded fund that invests at least 90% of its net assets in the securities of its underlying index, a modified equal-dollar weighted index that draws its constituents from the materials and processing sector of the Russell 1000® Index. The fund uses First Trusts proprietary AlphaDEX® selection methodology, which is a rules-based quantitative approach designed to screen and rank stocks using fundamental and/or technical factors in an attempt to identify companies that may outperform traditional market-cap-weighted indices. The materials and processing sector generally encompasses companies engaged in the discovery, extraction, refinement, or manufacturing of raw and processed materials, including industries such as chemicals, mining, construction materials, paper and packaging, and metals. The funds holdings are rebalanced and reconstituted periodically according to the index methodology, and it employs a passive structure despite its active stock-selection approach.
