The iShares MBS ETF (MBB) is a passively managed fund that seeks to track the performance of an underlying index composed of investment-grade mortgage-backed securities (MBS). Per its investment policy, the fund allocates at least 80% of its assets to the indexs component securities and TBA (To-Be-Announced) contracts that closely mirror those securities, while at least 90% is invested in fixed income securities matching the indexs composition. The fund is managed by BlackRock Fund Advisors (BFA), one of the worlds largest ETF providers.
TBAs are forward contracts commonly used in the MBS market, where the buyer agrees to purchase mortgage pools with specific characteristics, but the actual seller and pool identity are announced shortly before settlement. As a Government Mortgage-Backed Bond ETF, MBB primarily holds securities issued or guaranteed by U.S. government agencies such as Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac, which carry implicit or explicit government backing.
