The iShares iBonds Dec 2033 Term Treasury ETF (IBTO) is a target-maturity exchange-traded fund that passively tracks an underlying index by holding its component securities. Under normal operations, the fund commits at least 80% of its assets to the indexs component securities and at least 90% to U.S. Treasury obligations selected by BlackRock Fund Advisors (BFA), the funds advisor. These minimum thresholds apply except during the wind-down phase in the final months before the fund terminates at its December 2033 target maturity.
Target-maturity bond ETFs operate on a defined end date, at which point the fund is typically liquidated and net asset value is returned to shareholders, allowing investors to match a fixed-income holding to a specific liability or investment horizon. iShares is the ETF brand of BlackRock, the worlds largest asset manager, and IBTO falls within the Treasury-focused target-maturity segment that has grown in popularity as a transparent, low-cost vehicle for building bond ladders.
