Bankwell Financial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: BWFG) is a Connecticut-based bank holding company that operates Bankwell Bank, serving both individual and commercial customers through a network of branches located in New Canaan, Stamford, Fairfield, Westport, Darien, Norwalk, and Hamden. The company offers a full suite of traditional depository products, including checking, savings, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit.
On the lending side, Bankwell provides a diversified loan portfolio covering first mortgage loans, home equity loans and lines of credit, commercial real estate financing (including multi-family and owner-occupied properties), commercial construction loans, land loans, commercial business loans, insurance premium financing, overdraft lines of credit, and personal loans. This mix of consumer and commercial lending is typical of community and regional banks, which rely on local deposit gathering to fund relationship-based lending in their markets.
Founded in 2002 and headquartered in New Canaan, Connecticut, the company was formerly known as BNC Financial Group, Inc. before adopting its current name in September 2013. As a small-cap regional bank in the Financials sector, Bankwells business model is centered on community banking, with geographic concentration in the southwestern Connecticut market.
