The iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL) is a passively managed fund that seeks to track an underlying index built on the MSCI USA Index, a broad benchmark of U.S. large- and mid-cap equities. The fund invests at least 80% of its assets in the indexs component securities and may use the remaining portion for futures, options, swap contracts, and cash equivalents to manage exposures or liquidity.
As a quality factor ETF, QUAL employs a rules-based methodology that tilts toward companies with strong fundamentals, such as high return on equity, stable earnings, and low financial leverage. The parent index weighting begins as traditional market capitalization-weighted, after which the quality screen and reweighting are applied to construct the final portfolio.
