Description: IEO U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration

The iShares U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (IEO) is a passively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of an underlying index composed of U.S.-listed exploration and production companies. Under normal circumstances, the fund invests at least 80% of its assets in the component securities of that index and may use the remaining portion for futures, options, swap contracts, cash equivalents (including affiliated money market funds), and other securities selected by the index provider to help it track its benchmark. The fund is structured as a non-diversified fund, meaning it may hold a more concentrated portfolio than diversified funds, which is common in sector-specific ETFs that target a narrow segment of the market.

Exploration and production companies operate in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry, focusing on locating hydrocarbon reserves, drilling wells, and bringing crude oil and natural gas to the surface. This distinguishes them from midstream businesses (pipelines, storage, and transportation) and downstream operations (refining, marketing, and petrochemicals). As an Equity Energy ETF focused on this upstream slice of the U.S. market, IEO offers targeted exposure to companies whose revenues and valuations are closely tied to commodity price movements in oil and natural gas.

Headlines to Watch Out For

  • U.S. shale producers boost capital returns to shareholders
