Description: BHB Bar Harbor Bankshares

Bar Harbor Bankshares (BHB) is a U.S. small-cap bank holding company headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, operating primarily through its subsidiary, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. Founded in 1887 and publicly listed on AMEX since 1997, BHB operates in the regional banking segment of the financials sector, serving both retail and commercial clients across its markets.

The company provides a full suite of deposit products, including interest-bearing and non-interest-bearing demand accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit. Its deposit-gathering model funds a diversified lending portfolio spanning commercial construction (raw land, land development, multifamily), commercial real estate (owner-occupied and non-owner-occupied), tax-exempt loans to municipalities, and commercial and industrial loans for working capital and capital investment.

On the consumer side, BHB originates residential mortgages (one-to-four family homes), home equity loans, and consumer credit products such as personal lines of credit, auto loans, and overdraft protection. Like all regulated lenders, the company maintains an allowance for credit losses to absorb potential loan default risks, in line with standard regional bank accounting practices.

Beyond core banking, BHB generates noninterest income through wealth management, trust and estate services, financial planning, retirement products, life insurance, annuities, and third-party investment and insurance offerings. These services are delivered to individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and municipalities, and include 401(k) plan administration, family office services, and tax and estate planning-diversifying revenue streams beyond traditional net interest margin activity, which is a common strategy for community and regional banks seeking fee-based income.
